What is mammography?

Mammography is an imaging test for the breasts that looks for early signs of breast cancer.

Lucina Women's Health and Midwifery offers state-of-the-art concierge mammography services, giving you access to the imaging you need to care for your health.

When do I need mammography?

Your women’s health specialist can talk to you about when to get mammography testing. You may start mammography at age 40, but it’s recommended all women begin breast cancer screening mammograms at 45. You need to repeat these screenings every year until 65.

Some women may start mammogram screenings sooner than 40 if they have a personal or family history of breast cancer.

How do I know what type of mammography is best for me?

Your provider at Lucina Women's Health and Midwifery can talk to you about the mammography services they offer so you know what test makes the best choice for you.

Types of mammography tests include:

X-ray mammogram

The X-ray mammogram is the traditional screening test and the first mammogram you get before proceeding with any other test. During this test, the mammogram technician pressed each breast between two plates, flattening the tissue and then taking X-ray images at different angles.

Abnormalities in the images may appear as small white spots that need further testing.

3D mammogram

A 3D mammogram is an advanced mammography test that takes multiple X-ray images of your breast tissue and then reconstructs those images to create a 3D picture of your breast tissue.

The 3D reconstruction creates a more detailed image of the breast, making it easier to identify abnormalities.

Ultrasound mammogram

The ultrasound mammogram uses ultrasound technology to create images of the breast tissue. Women with dense breast tissue may need an ultrasound mammogram following the X-ray mammogram. The ultrasound mammogram can find abnormal tissue not visible in an X-ray of dense breast tissue.

When can I expect results from mammography?

The women’s health specialists at Lucina Women's Health and Midwifery are experts in mammography and provide real-time results. This means they talk to you about the findings from the imaging at the time of your test. They can also discuss next steps for abnormalities.

Mammography saves lives. Lucina Women's Health and Midwifery offers these screening tests in a comfortable and private environment and provides results right away to limit anxiety.
